Children wearing bright orange vests were at work on Ellsworth's downtown streets July 14 under the watchful eyes of adults, including an Ellsworth police officer. Contrary to what the scene may have suggested, however, the young people were not troublemakers atoning for past transgressions. Instead, they were spreading a message about how everyone can help protect the environment. In a partnership between the city of Ellsworth, the Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Down East Family YMCA, the children were painting warnings next to downtown storm drains. The warnings read “DUMP NO WASTE/DRAINS TO RIVER” and feature an outline of a fish.
